Make a Better Future

The world we live today has experienced some development and will do some development in the future. We, the young adults who will continue the struggle of our ancestors, have to build initiative and innovative on how to deal with the globalization which has impact us both positively and negatively. As the next generation, 10 to 20 years we will experience a major difference in globalization. Globalization can be useful as well as damaging our lives. As what we have learned all these time, we are warned to be selective in accepting the culture taken from outside Indonesia. But first let us remind ourselves what impact globalization has on us.

Starting with the positive impacts. Globalization starts with the existence of Internet where you can access almost everything from around the world any time anywhere. The freedom given to us must not be taken for granted. While many people prefer to do good things with Internet such as for school works, maintain good relationship with our friends or families, and also do business, some others prefer to do bad things. Abusing the internet include watching porn, hacking, bullying, and so much others.

Those bad things are our problems. Problems are meant to be solved. So it is our mission to solve that problem. Even when the government tried to prevent people abusing internet, it seems that we, young adults, are getting smarter and trickier, to the extend that we can avoid being blocked by the government from abusing the internet. So my goal in 10 to 20 years from now is first, to make a change in how we use Internet.

Nowadays, there are more people who use internet for the bad thing rather than the good thing. From here, cyber crime issues are raised. Cyber crime is a crime done via social media. Not to take this issue lightly, this can make someone mentally depressed, physically exhausted and may lead them to suicide. These issues could happen because people, usually teenagers don’t get proper education in how bullying via social medias could affect one’s life in reality. Bullying verbally is as dangerous as physically. They haven’t experienced being judged by people who don’t even know you well. From here we need to give interpretation to kids as early as possible to prevent they developing such behavior. We may make a simulation where kids can understand the feeling of being judged but not to the extend that they will be traumatized.

Globalization is not only about what we do through internet but also how we absorb those culture like fashion, taste of music, friendship and such. Just like what we have been told, we can absorb those but you have to be selective too. Don’t let it make you forget who you are from, what culture you have been given since the day you were born. For example, American culture have been effecting Indonesian’s culture as well. People are starting to forget how to speak their original language and starting to teach their children English, Mandarin, and other language they might need in the future. In that case, the children don’t develop such patriotism and nationalism towards their own country. Other example, they never wear traditional clothes like the ancestors do before. Instead, they wear shorts, tank tops, bikinis, like Americans do. This is categorized as inappropriate in Indonesia. Not only that, they don’t even know traditional songs, but they remember all of the lyrics from famous bands, singers in western countries.

From here we need to make a change. By introducing traditional cultures in school, make them go to competitions which are linked with traditional culture. Or as parents, you can teach them your traditional language to your children since toddler. We as adults in 10 or 20 years will make much more programs that can make citizens contribute in exhibiting their cultures and preventing them to become extinct and forgotten.

There is also other alternative way. We can also make our goals wider. Not just make cultures that we have known around Indonesia but also make the world notice just how beautiful, unique and uncountable cultures we have. But still, it doesn’t change who we are, we are not involved in any war with others.

Though all this couldn’t be done without each individual desire to change and to raise awareness just how important it is. If we don’t make a change as fast as we can, we might not be able to help it any longer. We may have nothing to be proud of. We may have nothing to tell our kids in the future. And that is what we have to prevent.
